Scrutiny head resigns with attack on ‘conflicted’ Deputy

Senator Ben Shenton.
SENATOR Ben Shenton has quit as head of the Scrutiny chairmen’s committee with an attack on Scrutiny colleagues and the States ministerial system.

The Senator says that Jersey’s system of government is not working and that ministers spend their time ‘firefighting’ and politicking, and that his own Scrutiny colleagues are hijacking the policy review process to serve their own political ambitions.

He has also accused Economic Scrutiny chairman Mike Higgins of a ‘perplexing’ attitude to conflicts of interest after pushing to review activities at the Airport, despite receiving payment for organising the International Air Display.

Deputy Higgins has responded angrily to the comments and said there is no conflict of interest.
