Stuart Syvret jailed for eight weeks

Iselin Vale reports

Stuart Syvret has been sentenced to eight weeks in jail today after dramatic scenes in Jersey's Magistrates Court.

Before being sentenced, Syvret was ordered to be arrested by the Judge after walking out of court during his hearing for claims he broke his 80-hour community service sentence.

Syvret had stood up and claimed the protection of common law and asked if there was any claim against him, before excusing himself and walking out of court.

Magistrate Bridget Shaw then ordered his arrest.

Syvret had asked to have his 'McKenzie Friend' present for legal advice - which is someone who does not need to be legally qualified who can assist you in court.

The court granted that request but then decided he had indeed breached his community service requirements and sentenced him to eight weeks in jail. It means he could spend Christmas behind bars.
