A FORMER Centenier who was chosen to carry the Olympic torch through Jersey this summer has been charged with indecently assaulting children.

Ralph Mauger (76), who was also involved in children’s charities and clubs, faces three counts of assaulting three girls between the ages of five and 14. All the offences are alleged to have happened during an eight year period from the late 1990s.

Mr Mauger, who was a Centenier in Grouville during the 1980s, was charged on Friday and remanded into custody at La Moye prison over the weekend. He made his first appearance in the Magistrate’s Court on Monday where he was granted conditional bail following a brief a hearing.

No further details of the alleged offences have yet been released.
