Child abuse inquiry to be open-ended Political oversight of Haut de la Garenne, investigated in 2008, is included in the inquiry A WIDE-RANGING inquiry into historical child abuse in Jersey, looking into events from the end of the Occupation to the present day, has been formally proposed by the Council of Ministers.
The terms of reference for the £6m inquiry have been published this morning by ministers, who say it should be run by a top lawyer or judge from outside the Island, backed by one or two panellists with no connections to Jersey.
This morning’s announcement follows a States decision last year to hold a committee of inquiry with powers to force people to attend, demand files of evidence, and hear some witnesses in private session. The proposal focuses on the organisation and political oversight of children’s homes, including Haut de la Garenne.
